Truce begins in Ukraine city where residents ate weeds to survive

The ceasefire in Oleshky, secured by US First Lady Melania Trump, is meant to allow aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians.

A truce has begun in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, a week after it was announced by US First Lady Melania Trump.

Ukrainian officials and Russia's defence ministry both say the limited ceasefire is being respected. The ceasefire is meant to allow aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians, which has been planned for Friday.

Oleshky is trapped between the Dnipro River, which forms the front line in the Kherson region and separates it from Ukrainian positions, and Russian forces.

Ukraine's parliament commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, also confirmed in a social media post that the ceasefire had begun.
